Compressing a signature down to 10KB or 20KB the naive way — just cranking down JPEG quality — usually leaves the paper background looking dirty and blotchy grey instead of white. That happens because a scan is rarely pure white to begin with: faint noise and uneven lighting give the encoder something uneven to distort once it's compressing hard.
This tool fixes that first: it pushes the background to true white and the ink to true black before compressing, so the file going into the encoder is already flat where it should be flat. The cleanup slider controls how aggressively that happens — turn it down if your signature has lighter, thinner strokes that are getting clipped away.

Questions
Why does my signature go grey when I compress it elsewhere?
Heavy JPEG compression distorts flat regions unevenly when they aren't already perfectly flat. A scanned background that looks white to the eye usually has faint noise in it, and that's exactly what turns blotchy at a very low quality setting.
My signature has very light strokes and they're disappearing — what do I do?
Lower the background cleanup slider. It's pushing more of the lighter pixels to pure white than you want — a lower setting keeps faint strokes intact at the cost of a slightly less perfectly white background.
Should I choose JPG or PNG?
Use whichever your form specifies — most ask for JPG. PNG is lossless (no compression artifacts at all) and supports a transparent background, which is useful if you'll place the signature over something else later.
Is my signature uploaded anywhere?
No. It's cleaned and compressed entirely on a canvas in your browser and never leaves your device.
