Circle crop

Cut a round profile picture with a transparent surround.

How to use Circle crop

  1. Drop your image onto the upload area.
  2. Move and resize the circle over the part of the image you want to keep.
  3. Choose PNG or WebP under Save as so the area outside the circle stays transparent.
  4. Click Cut & download.

A profile picture on most platforms displays as a circle regardless of what shape you upload — the platform crops it for you. This tool does that crop yourself, so the round version is the actual file, with a genuinely transparent background outside the circle rather than a square photo the platform happens to mask.

Drag the selection to centre it on a face, and resize it from the corners the same way as the crop tool. It starts as a centred square (a true circle) — dragging it into a non-square shape crops to an oval instead, which is sometimes exactly what you want and sometimes a sign to click back to Circle.

The output has to be PNG or WebP — JPG has no way to store a transparent area, so it isn't offered here. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Questions

Why isn't JPG offered as an output format?

JPG has no alpha channel, so it can't represent the transparent area outside the circle — it would have to be filled with a solid colour instead, defeating the point. PNG and WebP both support transparency properly.

Can I make an oval instead of a perfect circle?

Yes — drag the selection into a non-square shape and it crops to match. Click the Circle preset to snap back to a true circle at any point.

Will the transparent background show as white or black instead?

No, it's genuine transparency in the file — how it displays depends on wherever you place the image. A page with a white background will look identical to a solid white circle; a dark background will show through it if the site doesn't paint its own colour behind it.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The crop is drawn and encoded entirely in your browser — the file never leaves your device.
